Collectible Ukrainian banknotes cover several historical periods: the Ukrainian People’s Republic (1918–1920), the Soviet period (1922–1991), and independent Ukraine (since 1991).
The first banknotes of the Ukrainian People’s Republic — karbovantsi — were issued in denominations from 100 to 1000 karbovantsi. These notes are rare and highly valued by collectors as evidence of the establishment of the national financial system.
During the Soviet period, Soviet rubles circulated in Ukraine, as well as some regional or commemorative issues, which are historically significant for collectors.
After independence in 1991, Ukraine initially used coupon-karbovantsi with very high denominations — tens, hundreds of thousands, and even millions, reflecting the period of hyperinflation. In 1996, the Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH) was introduced to replace the karbovantsi. Early issues included denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 hryvnias. In 2006, the 500 hryvnias note was issued, and in 2019, the 1000 hryvnias note. Both these notes and the earlier karbovantsi are sought after by collectors.
The designs of modern banknotes feature prominent figures, architecture, and cultural heritage. Our catalog offers only genuine, authenticated pieces, with UNC (Uncirculated) notes being particularly prized.
Enhance your collection with Ukrainian banknotes — from the karbovantsi of the UPR to modern hryvnias: each issue preserves an important part of the nation’s history!
