Brazil Banknotes for Sale

Brazil banknotes are collectible notes with a rich history. The national currency — Brazilian real (BRL) — was introduced in 1994, replacing the previous currency, cruzeiro (Cruzeiro). Banknote designs reflect the country’s natural wealth, culture, historical landmarks, and national symbols, making them valuable items for collectors. You can order collectible Brazil banknotes in our online store.

Cruzeiro — before 1994

Before the real was introduced, cruzeiro banknotes circulated as Brazil’s national currency since 1942 (with various reforms). Series were issued in denominations including 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 5000 and higher, depending on the period of inflation. Cruzeiro banknotes are of interest to collectors because of the variety of designs, portraits of historical figures, depictions of flora and fauna, and national symbols. Later series (1980–1993) include high denominations linked to hyperinflation, making them especially valuable for collectors.

Main series of real banknotes

  • 1994–2000 — first real banknotes with portraits of famous Brazilians and natural symbols.
  • 2001–2010 — updated series with modern designs, including architecture and wildlife.
  • 2010–2020 — contemporary banknotes with security features and enhanced color schemes.

Denominations and design

Collector sets include banknotes in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 reais. Designs feature portraits of historical figures, images of flora and fauna, and national symbols.

Rare and notable notes

Collectors are especially interested in early issues from 1994–1996 and UNC (Uncirculated) notes. Old cruzeiro banknotes, especially rare series and well-preserved examples from 1980–1993, also have significant collectible value.
