Collectible Latvian banknotes cover several key periods: the first Latvian rubles (1919–1922), lats banknotes (1922–1940 and 1993–2013), as well as the temporary Latvian rubles “Repši” (1992–1993).
The first treasury issues of 1919–1922 included denominations from kopeks up to 500 rubles. These notes reflected the establishment of Latvia’s independent financial system and are valued by collectors today: larger denominations are much rarer, while kopek issues are more common but in high grades of preservation they are also considered collectible rarities.
Later, the lats (1922–1940) was introduced — initially at a rate of 1 lats = 50 rubles, gradually replacing the ruble. These banknotes stood out with their artistic design, traditional Latvian ornaments, architectural and ethnographic motifs.
The catalog also includes lats banknotes of regular circulation from 1992–2013 in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 lats. Their designs feature an oak and a solar ornament (5 Ls), the Daugava panorama and a traditional fibula (10 Ls), a historic homestead (20 Ls), a sailing ship and the medieval plan of Riga (50 Ls), the portrait of Krišjānis Barons with the Lielvārde belt ornament (100 Ls), and the profile of a Latvian maiden with a traditional headdress pattern (500 Ls).
Of special interest are the temporary issues of 1992–1993 — Latvian rubles, popularly known as “Repši” after the central bank’s governor Einars Repše. They were issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 200 and 500 rubles and circulated until the lats was introduced.
We offer only genuine, authenticated pieces. Notes in UNC (Uncirculated) condition are particularly sought after and much scarcer.
Enhance your collection with Latvian banknotes — from the first rubles of 1919 to the “Repši” and lats issues: each period preserves an important part of the nation’s history!
