San Marino 2 Euro 2018 – 500th Anniversary of the Birth of Tintoretto is a commemorative euro coin dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the birth of Jacopo Robusti, better known as Tintoretto, one of the most important painters of the Venetian Renaissance. Born in Venice in 1518, Tintoretto became renowned for his dramatic compositions, energetic movement, expressive figures and innovative use of perspective and light. San Marino dedicated this 2 Euro issue to his artistic legacy as part of its series of coins celebrating major figures of European culture.
The commemorative design reproduces a detail from Tintoretto’s celebrated painting “The Visitation”, specifically the emotional embrace of the Virgin Mary and Elizabeth. Rather than using a simple portrait of the artist, the coin places the focus on his own artistic language and allows a fragment of his painting to become the central numismatic image. The figures are arranged in a dynamic composition characteristic of Tintoretto, whose works are distinguished by movement, theatrical gestures and strong contrasts of light and shadow.
Surrounding the central scene are the inscriptions SAN MARINO and Tintoretto, while the commemorative dates 1518 and 2018 mark the 500-year anniversary. On the left side are the initials LDS of the coin's designer Luciana De Simoni and the letter R, the mintmark of the Italian State Mint in Rome. The outer ring carries the traditional 12 stars of the European Union. The common reverse shows the standard €2 European design with the denomination 2 EURO and the map of Europe.
The coin was issued in April 2018 with an official issuing volume of only 60,500 pieces. It was struck by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Rome. With its low mintage, Italian Renaissance subject and direct reproduction of a Tintoretto artwork, this issue is particularly attractive to collectors of San Marino euro coins, commemorative 2 Euro coins, Renaissance art and European cultural heritage.
Package includes: San Marino 2 Euro 2018 “500th Anniversary of the Birth of Tintoretto” commemorative coin in original Coincard, BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) quality.
