Malta 2 Euro 2026 Proof Set – Valletta & Pharaoh Hound (2 Coins) is a special collector set featuring two Maltese €2 commemorative coins issued in 2026. The set brings together two distinctive themes representing Malta’s cultural heritage and national identity: the historic fortified capital of Valletta and the Pharaoh Hound, known locally as Il-Kelb tal-Fenek. Both coins are presented in Proof quality, a premium finish created specifically for collectors.
The first coin is dedicated to Valletta, Malta’s historic capital and one of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable fortified cities. Founded by the Order of Saint John following the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, the city was named after Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette. Its foundation stone was laid on 28 March 1566. Valletta is renowned for its defensive walls, historic streets, Baroque architecture and important religious and civic buildings. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, the city represents a significant chapter in Malta’s history and the architectural heritage of the Mediterranean. The coin’s design celebrates Valletta as a lasting symbol of Maltese history and cultural identity, with the inscription “VALLETTA MALTA 2026”.
The second coin celebrates the Pharaoh Hound, or Il-Kelb tal-Fenek, a distinctive dog breed closely associated with Malta. The breed is known for its elegant profile, upright ears, lean physique and alert expression. Its Maltese name, commonly translated as “rabbit dog”, reflects its traditional association with rabbit hunting. The coin forms part of Malta’s Native Species series, which highlights animals and natural heritage connected with the islands. The national design features the profile of a Pharaoh Hound, accompanied by the inscription “IL-KELB TAL-FENEK”, the country name “MALTA” and the year “2026”. The design is credited to Maria Anna Frisone.
Both coins share the standard common side of the €2 denomination, designed by Luc Luycx, featuring a map of Europe and the twelve stars of the European Union. The combination of the two themes makes this set especially appealing to collectors interested in Maltese commemorative euros, European architecture, national traditions and animal-themed coinage.
The coins are struck in Proof quality, the premium finish used for collector issues. Proof production involves specially prepared dies and carefully selected blanks, creating a sharp design with contrasting polished and frosted surfaces. This finish highlights architectural details on the Valletta coin and the contours of the Pharaoh Hound portrait. Unlike ordinary circulation coins, Proof coins are manufactured and handled with particular care to achieve a refined presentation. The set offers both 2026 Maltese commemorative themes together in one collector-oriented release.
Package includes: Two Malta 2 Euro 2026 commemorative coins — Valletta and Pharaoh Hound — in Proof quality, presented as a collector set.
