Lithuania 5 Euro 2021 – Sea Festival is a silver collector coin from the Lithuanian series “Traditional Lithuanian Celebrations”, dedicated to the famous Sea Festival (Jūros šventė) of Klaipėda. The annual festival is one of Lithuania’s best-known maritime celebrations and is closely associated with Klaipėda, the country’s principal seaport. The 2021 issue marked the festival’s 61st anniversary and expresses Lithuania’s connection with the Baltic Sea, maritime traditions and the people whose lives are linked to the sea.
The coin has a particularly distinctive feature: a small piece of natural amber is incorporated into its centre. Amber is one of the most recognisable symbols of the Baltic Sea and has a deep historical connection with the region. The Bank of Lithuania noted that this was the first time amber had been used in a Lithuanian coin issued by the central bank. The combination of precious metal and genuine amber gives the issue an especially strong regional character and makes it more than a conventional commemorative coin.
The obverse combines the Vytis, the coat of arms of the Republic of Lithuania, with the coat of arms of Klaipėda. The inscriptions LIETUVA, 5 € and 2021, together with the Lithuanian Mint mark, are designed to appear as though they have been impressed into wet sand on the seashore. This treatment creates a visual connection between the national identity of Lithuania, the city of Klaipėda and the maritime theme of the issue. The reverse presents a dynamic composition of symbols associated with the Sea Festival and Klaipėda, creating the impression of a festive whirlpool of maritime imagery. Above the composition is the Lithuanian inscription JŪROS ŠVENTĖ (“Sea Festival”).
The coin was designed by Eglė Ratkutė and Adelė Žemaitienė for the obverse and Rytas Jonas Belevičius for the reverse. The proof finish emphasizes the contrast between mirror-like fields and finely detailed relief. The edge carries stylised representations of sea waves and seagulls, extending the maritime concept beyond the two main faces of the coin. With a limited mintage of only 2,500 pieces, the issue is particularly attractive to collectors of Lithuanian silver commemoratives, maritime-themed coins and the “Traditional Lithuanian Celebrations” series.
