Latvia 5 Lati 1931 is a classic silver collector coin, graded MS-62 by NGC. Struck in Silver 835°, weight 25 g and diameter 37 mm, it is highly prized for its artistic expression and historical significance. The mintage was 2,000,000 coins.
Obverse: features the large Coat of Arms of the Republic of Latvia in the center. Beneath is the numeral 5 topped with the year 1931. The inscriptions PIECI and LATI are arranged semicircularly to the left and right of the central motif.
Reverse: depicts a Latvian folk-maid in profile, facing right, with ears of corn on her shoulder. The inscriptions LATVIJAS and REPUBLIKA appear on the left and right of the central motif, respectively. This image symbolizes national virtue, hard work, and cultural identity. The prototype of the folk-maid was Zelma Brauere (1900–1977), and the plaster model was made by Percy Metcalfe of the Royal Mint (UK).
Edge: the inscriptions DIEVS, SVĒTĪ, LATVIJU separated by three hexagonal stars.
The coin became a symbol of freedom and statehood, widely cherished in pre-war Latvia and in exile during World War II. Its artistic expression remains iconic in Latvian numismatics.
A timeless Latvian silver coin, celebrated for its beauty, symbolism, and historical importance.
