Latvia 5 Euro 2022 – Satversme 100 is a silver collector coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia, known as the Satversme. Adopted by the Constitutional Assembly on 15 February 1922, the Satversme defines the fundamental principles of the Latvian state, its constitutional structure, democratic values and the relationship between the individual and the state. The centenary issue was created as a symbolic tribute to one of Latvia's most important statehood documents.
The coin has an exceptionally distinctive design based on two partially overlapping circles. This unusual shape creates a visual connection between different elements of the composition and reflects the relationship between the constitutional foundations of the state and the values expressed in the Satversme. On the obverse, frosted arched lines pass from one circle into the other. One of these lines is highlighted with an overprint in the red-white-red colours of the Latvian national flag. The inscription “Latvijas Republikas Satversme” follows the upper curve of the left circle, while 1922 appears on the flag-coloured line. The denomination 5 EURO is placed on the right, with 2022 completing the centenary reference.
The reverse develops the same interconnected circular concept. Instead of a conventional figurative image, the two circles are visually joined by arched lines formed from words representing the fundamental values embodied in the Satversme. The text-based composition turns the constitutional principles themselves into the central artistic element of the coin. The combination of engraved and frosted details with colour printing gives the surface a layered appearance and makes the coin particularly distinctive among Latvian modern collector issues.
The coin was designed by Latvian artist Aigars Ozoliņš and struck at the Lithuanian Mint (Lietuvos monetų kalykla). It is made of 925 sterling silver, weighs 26.24 g and measures 45 mm in diameter. The coin is struck in Proof quality and features colour printing on both the obverse and reverse, together with frosted letters and lines. Its official maximum mintage was limited to only 2,500 pieces, making it a significant issue for collectors of Latvian silver coins, constitutional history and modern artistic numismatics.
