Latvia 2 Lats 1926 (VF-XF) is a classic silver circulation coin of the First Republic of Latvia, issued during the formative period of the Latvian lats. The 2-lati denomination was introduced for circulation in the 1920s, and the 1926 issue is the second and final year of the type KM#8. With a mintage of 1,114,000 pieces, the 1926 date is considerably scarcer in production than the 1925 issue, which had a much larger mintage.
The obverse presents the large coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia with its heraldic supporters, a lion and a griffin. Above the shield are three stars representing the historical regions of Latvia, while the composition is framed by oak branches. The surrounding inscription LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA identifies the newly established Latvian state and gives the coin a distinctly national character. The design reflects the visual language used for Latvia's early republican coinage.
The reverse is deliberately restrained and classical: the denomination 2 LATI and the date 1926 are placed within a decorative wreath. The contrast between the elaborate national coat of arms and the simpler value side creates a balanced composition typical of interwar Latvian monetary design. The coin was struck at the Royal Mint in London, an important detail in the history of Latvia's early national coinage, as the young republic commissioned several of its first circulating coins from established foreign mints.
Struck in .835 silver, the coin weighs 10.00 g and measures 27 mm in diameter. The edge is reeded. The VF-XF grade indicates a circulated example retaining a substantial amount of the original design detail, while showing the normal wear associated with circulation. This 1926 silver 2 Lati is therefore both a historical Latvian monetary issue and a tangible piece of the country's First Republic period.
