The Latvia 1 Lats 2010 “Amber Coin” is a remarkable collector coin issued by the Bank of Latvia (Latvijas Banka). This unique numismatic piece combines 925 silver with a genuine piece of Baltic amber, one of the most iconic natural treasures of the Baltic region.
Amber, often called the “Baltic gold”, has been valued for thousands of years and played an important role in trade along the historic Amber Road. By integrating natural amber directly into the coin, this issue symbolically connects Latvia’s natural heritage with modern numismatic art.
Obverse: In the center of the coin a transparent cylindrical piece of natural Baltic amber is embedded. In the upper left field appears the denomination “1 LATS”, while stylized sea waves in the upper right symbolize the Baltic Sea – the natural source of amber. Along the lower edge runs the inscription “LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA” with the year of issue 2010.
Reverse: The design features a stylized human eye, with the amber insert forming the pupil. The artistic concept symbolizes the idea that amber, formed millions of years ago, metaphorically “looks” at the modern world for the first time.
The coin was struck in Proof quality, featuring a mirror-like background and frosted design elements that emphasize the amber insert and create an impressive visual contrast.
Complectation: coin in capsule, original presentation box and certificate of authenticity.
This innovative Latvian collector coin combines precious metal with natural Baltic amber, making it a distinctive piece of modern European numismatics and a desirable item for collectors of Baltic coins and unique design issues.
