About the Swiss Pontifical Guard: Founded in 1506 by Pope Julius II, the Swiss Guard serves as the personal bodyguard of the Pope. Known for its colourful Renaissance-style uniforms and strict discipline, it is the oldest standing military unit in continuous service in the world.
