Belarus Banknotes - Collectible Currency with a Rich History
The Belarusian ruble was introduced in 1992 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The first banknote series became well-known for their animal imagery, featuring hare, beaver, lynx, wolf, elk, bison, and other native fauna. These notes quickly became popular among collectors.
Most notable denominations from the animal series include:
- 0.5 ruble - squirrel
- 1 ruble - hare
- 3 rubles - beaver
- 5 rubles - wolf
- 10 rubles - lynx
- 25 rubles - elk
- 50 rubles - bear
- 100 rubles - bison
Curiously, the 50-ruble note featured an American black bear instead of the Eurasian brown bear, which is often cited as a design mistake in Belarusian currency history.
During the late 1990s, due to hyperinflation, notes with values up to several million rubles were issued. In 2000, Belarus carried out a denomination (1 new ruble = 1,000 old), and in 2016, a monetary reform introduced modern banknotes from 5 to 500 rubles featuring cultural and architectural landmarks.
