Official 2 euro commemorative coin issued by the Republic of San Marino in 2025 to celebrate the 550th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo Buonarroti – one of the greatest masters of the Renaissance.
Obverse: Features the famous drawing "Cleopatra" by Michelangelo, a pencil sketch made for his friend Tommaso dei Cavalieri. The artwork is preserved at the Casa Buonarroti Museum in Florence and is considered one of his most personal pieces. The years "1475" and "2025" are engraved on either side, with the mintmark "R" above. The inscriptions "MICHELANGELO" and "SAN MARINO" run along the edges, surrounded by 12 EU stars.
Reverse: Common design used on all €2 coins – map of Europe and denomination.
The coin is struck in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality and presented in an official blister card. Mintage limited to only 52,000 pieces. The national side was designed by Silvia Petrassi; the common reverse was created by Luc Luycx.
Michelangelo is renowned as a genius sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. His masterpieces — the Sistine Chapel frescoes, "David", and "Pietà" — have become iconic treasures of world art.
