San Marino 2 Euro 2005 – World Year of Physics is a commemorative euro coin dedicated to the World Year of Physics 2005, an international celebration marking the centenary of several of Albert Einstein’s groundbreaking works and highlighting the importance of physics in modern science. San Marino’s issue approaches the theme through one of the most important figures in the history of physics and astronomy: Galileo Galilei, whose observations and studies fundamentally changed the understanding of the universe.

The central design is a free interpretation of the allegorical painting known as “La fisica antica”, or “The Study of the Planets”, associated with Galileo Galilei. Galileo is shown at a desk studying the celestial sphere, creating a direct visual reference to the scientific investigation of planetary motion and the development of modern astronomy. Beneath the globe appears the year 2005. The composition is framed by the inscription SAN MARINO above and ANNO MONDIALE DELLA FISICA below, meaning “World Year of Physics”.

A particularly distinctive feature of the coin is the stylised atom extending across the entire design. Its orbital elements visually connect the central historical image of Galileo with the scientific theme of modern physics, while the 12 stars of the European Union remain visible around the outer ring. The mintmark R of the Rome Mint appears to the left of the central composition, while the engraver’s initials LDS are placed on the right. The coin therefore combines Renaissance scientific heritage with the international scientific character of the 2005 celebration.

The coin was struck by the Italian State Mint in Rome and has the standard technical characteristics of the San Marino 2 Euro denomination: a bimetallic construction, a copper-nickel outer ring and a nickel-brass centre clad with nickel. The reverse uses the standard €2 common design with a map of Europe and the denomination 2 EURO. The edge is finely reeded and carries the repeated inscription pattern 2 ★. With an issuing volume of only 130,000 pieces and an October 2005 issue date, this coin is an important early San Marino commemorative 2 Euro issue and an attractive addition to collections focused on science, astronomy, Galileo Galilei or San Marino euro coinage.
