Malta 2 Euro 2026 “Valletta” – UNC is a commemorative €2 coin dedicated to Valletta, Malta’s historic capital and one of the Mediterranean’s most distinctive fortified cities. The issue belongs to Malta’s “Maltese Walled Cities” series, celebrating the country’s historic urban fortifications and architectural heritage. Valletta was founded by the Order of St John following the Great Siege of 1565, with its foundation stone laid by Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette on 28 March 1566. The city subsequently became the political and administrative centre of Malta and developed into an outstanding example of a planned Renaissance fortified city.
The national side features a detailed perspective view of Valletta and its massive fortifications. The elevated composition brings together the defensive walls, bastions and dense historic architecture that define the Maltese capital. Rather than focusing on a single monument, the design presents Valletta as an integrated fortified urban landscape, emphasizing the relationship between the city’s architecture and its defensive system. The inscriptions “VALLETTA MALTA” and “2026” identify the subject and year of issue, while the initials “NGB” belong to designer and engraver Noel Galea Bason.
Valletta is particularly significant in European architectural history because its streets and fortifications were conceived as a unified urban plan after the Ottoman siege of 1565. Its compact historic centre contains an exceptional concentration of churches, palaces, public buildings and military structures. In 1980, Valletta was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognizing the outstanding historical and architectural value of the city. The commemorative design therefore represents not simply Malta’s capital, but a city whose identity was shaped by military engineering, Mediterranean history and the heritage of the Order of St John.
This edition is struck in UNC / Brilliant Uncirculated quality and represents the part of the issue intended for circulation. The total mintage is 140,000 coins. Of this amount, 30,000 coins were allocated to BU Coincards and 7,000 coins were included in annual sets. The remaining 103,000 coins were released for circulation in UNC quality. This distribution makes the loose UNC coin a distinct format within the overall 2026 Valletta commemorative issue.
The coin was struck by the Royal Dutch Mint, while the common European side follows the standard €2 design created by Luc Luycx. The Maltese national design was created and engraved by Noel Galea Bason. For collectors, the 2026 Valletta issue combines an important Maltese historical subject with a highly recognizable architectural composition and a clearly documented limited overall mintage. The UNC version is especially suitable for collections focused on Malta, European capitals, UNESCO World Heritage sites, fortified cities and €2 commemorative coins.
Package includes: 1 × Malta 2 Euro 2026 “Valletta” commemorative coin in UNC / Brilliant Uncirculated quality.
