Malta 2 Euro 2026 “City of Valletta” – Proof Coin is a commemorative €2 issue dedicated to Valletta, the historic capital of Malta and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The coin forms the third issue in Malta’s “Maltese Walled Cities” series, following earlier commemorations devoted to fortified Maltese cities. Valletta was founded by the Order of St John after the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, with the foundation stone laid by Grand Master Jean de Valette on 28 March 1566. The city subsequently became Malta’s political and administrative centre and remains one of the most remarkable fortified urban landscapes in the Mediterranean.

The national side presents a detailed perspective view of Valletta from above its fortifications. The composition emphasizes the monumental defensive walls, bastions and the dense historic cityscape, allowing the architectural character of the Maltese capital to dominate the design. The elevated viewpoint also highlights the relationship between the city’s planned streets, massive fortifications and historic buildings. The inscription “VALLETTA MALTA” appears above the main image, while “2026” identifies the year of issue. The initials “NGB” refer to designer and engraver Noel Galea Bason.

Valletta was named after Jean Parisot de Valette, Grand Master of the Order of St John, and was deliberately planned as a fortified city following the 1565 Ottoman siege. Its compact urban area contains an exceptional concentration of military, religious, civic and architectural heritage. The city was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. The coin therefore does more than portray Malta’s capital: its architectural composition reflects Valletta’s historical role as a strategically fortified Mediterranean city and an enduring symbol of Malta’s cultural heritage.

This particular edition is the Proof version, produced for collectors in a strictly limited mintage of 3,000 pieces. The Proof finish gives the coin a pronounced contrast between mirror-polished fields and carefully frosted relief elements, allowing the architectural details of Valletta to stand out with greater clarity than on the standard Brilliant Uncirculated versions. The coin was struck by the Royal Dutch Mint and features the standard bimetallic construction of a €2 coin. The common European side was designed by Luc Luycx, while the Maltese national side was designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason.

The limited Proof edition was issued alongside BU rolls, BU Coincards and the 2026 Malta Dated Set. The Proof coin is presented separately in an official collector case, making this version especially suitable for collectors of Maltese euro commemoratives, UNESCO World Heritage themes, European capitals and architectural coinage. With only 3,000 Proof examples, it represents the premium collector finish of the 2026 Valletta commemorative issue.
