Malta 2 Euro 2026 – Pharaoh Hound (Il-Kelb tal-Fenek) is a commemorative euro coin dedicated to the Pharaoh Hound, known in Maltese as Il-Kelb tal-Fenek, meaning “rabbit dog”. The issue forms part of Malta’s Native Species series and celebrates a dog breed closely associated with the island’s traditional rural culture and rabbit-hunting heritage.
The national side presents a carefully detailed side profile of the Pharaoh Hound, emphasizing its characteristic upright ears, elongated head, slender body and alert posture. The restrained composition leaves the animal as the clear focal point of the design. The Maltese inscription IL-KELB TAL-FENEK appears beside the figure, while MALTA and the year 2026 identify the issuing country and date. The initials of designer Maria Anna Frisone are incorporated into the design. The common European side, designed by Luc Luycx, carries the standard €2 denomination and geographical map motif.
The Pharaoh Hound has a particularly strong connection with Malta. Traditionally known locally as the Kelb tal-Fenek, the breed was associated with rabbit hunting and became part of the island’s cultural and rural heritage. Its athletic build, large erect ears and short reddish-brown coat give it a highly recognizable appearance. The breed is also regarded as Malta’s national dog, making it a natural subject for a commemorative series highlighting the country's native and culturally significant animal heritage.
This UNC (Uncirculated) version belongs to the regular circulation allocation of the 2026 commemorative issue. The Central Bank of Malta lists 105,000 coins in UNC quality, alongside separate BU and Proof editions. The coin was struck by the Royal Dutch Mint. With its Maltese-language title, national symbolism and connection to traditional island life, the issue offers a distinctive combination of numismatic and cultural interest.
