2 Euro Italy 2026 – Saint Francis of Assisi (UNC) is a commemorative euro coin marking the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi (1226–2026), one of the most influential religious figures in Italian and European history. Known for his devotion to poverty, humility, peace and care for all living creatures, Saint Francis founded the Franciscan movement and became a lasting symbol of compassion and respect for nature. The anniversary provides the theme for this Italian €2 commemorative issue, combining historical remembrance with a message that continues to resonate today.
The national side features a portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi inspired by a 14th-century fresco by the celebrated Sienese painter Simone Martini, preserved in the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, Umbria. This artistic reference connects the modern euro coin with Italy’s rich religious and artistic heritage. The inscription “SAN FRANCESCO D’ASSISI” appears alongside the dates “1226–2026”, marking eight centuries since the saint’s death and commemorating his enduring legacy.
The design also includes the Italian Republic monogram “RI”, the letter “R” identifying the Rome Mint, and the artist’s initials “AV”, representing designer Antonio Vecchio. The twelve stars of the European Union are arranged around the outer ring, following the standard format of a €2 commemorative coin. The composition combines the saint’s historical image with precise national and mint identifiers, giving the issue a distinctly Italian character.
Saint Francis was born in Assisi around 1181–1182 and gave up a life of wealth to devote himself to religious service and a life of simplicity. His teachings emphasised peace, fraternity, humility and respect for creation. The Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, where the fresco inspiring the coin’s design is preserved, is an important destination for religious pilgrims and art enthusiasts. This commemorative issue is therefore relevant to collectors interested in Italian history, Christian heritage, Renaissance art and the history of the euro.
This coin is offered in UNC (Uncirculated) quality, the standard uncirculated version intended for circulation and collecting. Italy’s official 2026 issue includes 3,000,000 coins for ordinary circulation, alongside separate collector versions and original rolls. The mintage of the loose UNC circulation version is therefore 3,000,000 coins. This listing refers to one individual coin, not a 25-coin roll or a separately packaged Proof or Reverse Proof edition.
Package includes: One Italy 2 Euro 2026 commemorative coin dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, in UNC quality.
