2 Euro Italy 2026 "Saint Francis of Assisi" Proof

Italy 2 Euro 2026 “Saint Francis of Assisi” – Proof commemorates the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi (1226–2026), one of the most influential figures in Italian religious and cultural history and the patron saint of Italy. The commemorative issue was released by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance and produced by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato (IPZS). The coin forms part of Italy’s 2026 Numismatic Collection and was officially issued on 1 April 2026.

The national side presents Saint Francis of Assisi, based on the famous portrait of the saint from a 14th-century fresco by Simone Martini, preserved in the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. The portrait gives the coin a strong connection with the artistic heritage of Assisi and the medieval Italian tradition. Around the image appears the inscription “SAN FRANCESCO D’ASSISI 1226•2026”, clearly identifying the subject and the 800th anniversary being commemorated. The “R” mintmark of the Rome Mint and the initials “RI” of the Italian Republic are also incorporated into the design.

The Proof version is distinguished by its specially prepared collector finish: the background surfaces are highly polished and mirror-like, while the principal design elements are satin-finished. This contrast between reflective fields and matt relief gives the portrait and inscriptions exceptional visual definition. It also clearly distinguishes the Proof edition from the standard Fior di Conio (BU/UNC) version and from the innovative Reverse Proof edition issued for the same commemorative theme.

The 2026 Saint Francis 2 Euro was produced in three finishes: Fior di Conio, Proof and Reverse Proof. The official Proof mintage is limited to 12,000 pieces, while 12,000 coins were issued in Fior di Conio and 5,000 in Reverse Proof. The combination of the historically important subject, the direct artistic reference to Simone Martini and the limited Proof production makes this issue a distinctive addition to collections of Italian commemorative €2 coins.
