2 Euro Italy 2026 – Carlo Collodi / Pinocchio Proof is a special collector version commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Carlo Collodi (1826–2026), the Italian author whose creation Pinocchio became one of the most enduring characters in world literature. Issued by the Italian State Mint (IPZS) in Rome, this Proof edition combines the literary theme with a carefully controlled collector finish designed to emphasise the relief and fine details of the national-side composition.
The national side presents Pinocchio in a dynamic dancing pose. His shadow appears behind him, looking with surprise towards the Talking Cricket positioned on the tip of Pinocchio's famously lengthening nose. The scene refers to the well-known episode in The Adventures of Pinocchio in which the puppet's nose grows when he tells lies. The composition is therefore more than a portrait of the literary character: it incorporates several recognisable elements of Collodi's story into a compact numismatic design.
The commemorative inscriptions identify both the author and the anniversary: CARLO COLLODI appears together with the dates 1826 and 2026, while PINOCCHIO is placed in the lower part of the design. The R mintmark identifies the Rome Mint, and RI represents Repubblica Italiana. The initials MB identify designer Marta Bonifacio. The twelve stars of the European Union surround the national design.
This edition is struck in Proof quality, intended specifically for collectors. Proof production gives the coin a distinctly sharper visual contrast, with highly polished, mirror-like fields contrasting against the specially treated raised design elements. This finish makes the details of Pinocchio, the Talking Cricket and the surrounding inscriptions particularly prominent and differentiates this version from the standard UNC circulation issue.
The Proof mintage is limited to 10,000 coins. The common European side follows the design of Luc Luycx, showing the denomination 2 EURO and the map of Europe. As a special collector issue, the coin is presented in official collector packaging rather than as a loose circulation coin. Its standard Italian €2 edge carries the inscription pattern “2 ★” repeated six times, alternating in orientation.
