2 Euro Italy 2026 – Carlo Collodi / Pinocchio UNC is a commemorative Italian €2 coin issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Carlo Collodi (1826–2026), the author whose literary creation Pinocchio became one of the most recognisable characters in world children's literature. The coin was issued on 5 March 2026 by the Italian State Mint (IPZS) in Rome and is intended both for ordinary circulation and for collectors.
The national side presents a particularly expressive interpretation of Pinocchio. At the centre, the wooden puppet is shown dancing, while in the background his shadow looks with astonishment at the Talking Cricket positioned on the tip of Pinocchio's famously lengthening nose. The scene refers directly to one of the best-known episodes of The Adventures of Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet, where the nose grows after Pinocchio tells a lie. This composition combines movement, humour and a recognisable literary reference within the limited space of a €2 coin.
The upper part of the design bears CARLO COLLODI together with the dates 1826 and 2026, marking the bicentenary commemorated by the issue. The inscription R identifies the Rome Mint, while RI stands for Repubblica Italiana. The name PINOCCHIO appears at the bottom, accompanied by the initials MB of designer Marta Bonifacio. The outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union.
This UNC (Uncirculated) version represents the regular circulation issue rather than the separately packaged collector versions. The official Italian issue programme provides for 3,000,000 coins for ordinary circulation, alongside separately allocated quantities for Fior di Conio, Proof, Reverse Proof and special 25-coin rolls. The standard circulating version therefore offers collectors the opportunity to acquire the commemorative design in its regular legal-tender format while retaining the characteristic technical specifications of the Italian €2 coin.
The reverse follows the common euro design created by Luc Luycx, depicting the map of Europe and the denomination 2 EURO. The coin is bimetallic, with a nickel-brass centre and copper-nickel outer ring. Its edge carries the standard Italian €2 inscription pattern “2 ★” repeated six times, alternating in orientation.
