2 Euro Ireland 2026 - 50 Years of the Rock Band U2 (Proof) commemorates 50 years since the formation of U2 in Dublin in 1976. The official issue comprises only 5,000 Proof coins, presented in collector booklets. The official launch took place on 25 September 2026, exactly 50 years after the band's formation.

The U2 story began when drummer Larry Mullen Jr. placed a handwritten notice at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin seeking musicians to form a band. The musicians who came together became the original and continuing four-member line-up: Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.. The 2026 commemorative coin depicts all four members, making the issue unusually direct in its representation of the band itself. The design was created by Irish artist Shaughn McGrath and was developed in collaboration with U2.

The official mintage of the Proof version is 5,000 pieces. Importantly for collectors, this figure should not be confused with the quantity that was immediately available through the public retail channel. There were also reports of an initial allocation arrangement involving U2-related promotional and rights-holder channels, but the Central Bank's official release confirms the total mintage rather than publishing a detailed breakdown of allocations. Therefore, the 5,000-piece figure is the reliable official mintage, while the exact number ultimately reaching general collector retail cannot be established from the official announcement.

Obverse: the Irish national side features portraits of the four U2 members. From left to right they are Adam Clayton, Bono, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr.. Above the portraits is the U2 anniversary branding, while the design includes the large 50 anniversary reference, the dates 1976–2026 and the national name Éire. The four portraits form the visual centre of the coin, making it immediately identifiable as the official 50th-anniversary U2 issue.

Reverse: the common 2 Euro design, created by Luc Luycx, features the denomination 2 EURO over a geographical representation of Europe, surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union. The standard reverse links this highly specialised Irish commemorative theme to the common euro coinage system.

The Proof finish is the highest collector quality used for this issue. According to the Central Bank of Ireland, Proof coins are produced from polished blanks using specially prepared dies, creating a strong visual contrast between the flawless mirror-like background and frosted matt relief. Each Proof coin is struck individually, handled with gloves and protected in a capsule. The 2026 U2 issue is specifically a Proof collector product and is presented in an official booklet rather than the Coincard used for the BU version.
