2 Euro Ireland 2026 - 50 Years of the Rock Band U2 (Coincard, BU) commemorates five decades since the formation of U2 in Dublin in 1976. The Irish Central Bank issued this dedicated €2 commemorative coin in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality as a Coincard edition, with a limited mintage of 150,000 pieces. The design is especially notable because the national side depicts all four original members of U2, making the coin a direct visual tribute to the band's complete classic line-up.
U2 began in 1976 after drummer Larry Mullen Jr. placed a handwritten notice at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin seeking musicians to form a band. The original line-up that emerged was Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr., and these four musicians are the people portrayed on the commemorative coin. The 2026 issue therefore marks the 50th anniversary of the band's formation while connecting an important chapter of modern Irish cultural history with the country's euro coinage. The coin was designed by Shaughn McGrath and was officially launched by the Central Bank of Ireland on 25 September 2026.
Obverse: the national side features portraits of the four U2 members, arranged from left to right as Adam Clayton, Bono, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr.. The design includes the prominent U2 name, the anniversary inscription U2 50th ANNIVERSARY, the dates 1976–2026 and the Irish designation Éire. The composition deliberately focuses on the four musicians who have formed U2 since its earliest years, making the portraits the central identifying feature of the commemorative issue.
Reverse: the common 2 Euro design by Luc Luycx shows a geographical map of Europe with the denomination 2 EURO superimposed over the map. Twelve stars appear around the outer ring, while the standard euro elements identify the coin as legal tender within the euro area.
The BU Coincard version differs from the separate Proof collector issue through both its finish and presentation. Brilliant Uncirculated coins are struck for collectors with a fresh die and have a more polished appearance than ordinary circulation coins. The official Coincard format combines the coin with dedicated printed collector presentation, providing protection while keeping the commemorative design visible.
Complectation: Ireland 2 Euro 2026 commemorative BU coin dedicated to U2's 50th anniversary, presented in the official Coincard format. The Coincard contains the commemorative coin and dedicated collector presentation, making it suitable for storage, display and thematic music or euro-coin collections.
