2 Euro Greece 2026 - 200 Years since the Exodus of Messolonghi commemorates the bicentenary of the Exodus of Messolonghi in 1826, one of the defining episodes of the Greek War of Independence. This is the standard circulation-quality commemorative issue, produced by the Bank of Greece - Mint in Halandri. The official maximum issue for the circulation version is 740,500 pieces.
The siege of Messolonghi became an important symbol of resistance and self-sacrifice. The fall of the city in April 1826 shocked European public opinion and contributed to renewed support for the philhellenic movement. Messolonghi was subsequently recognised as a Sacred City and remains an important place in the historical memory of modern Greece. The commemorative design was created by Greek engraver Georgios Stamatopoulos.
Obverse: The national side carries the commemorative composition dedicated to the Exodus. The design is accompanied by the Greek inscription "200 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΕΞΟΔΟ ΤΟΥ ΜΕΣΟΛΟΓΓΙΟΥ", meaning "200 Years since the Exodus of Messolonghi", together with the year 2026 and "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ". The outer ring contains the twelve stars of the European Union.
Reverse: The common €2 side follows the standard European design by Luc Luycx. It presents a geographical representation of Europe with the denomination "2 EURO". The edge carries the Greek inscription "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" together with a star, following the edge design used for Greek €2 circulation coins.
