Erasmus is an EU student and teacher exchange programme between universities founded in 1987. Started in 11 countries and 3,000 students, Erasmus has become the most popular programme in education, with over 9 million members since its inception. More than 300 thousand students and 42 countries participate in the programme every year, and more than 100 countries are involved in Erasmus projects.
The goals of the Erasmus programme are to develop students educationally, linguistically and culturally; form highly qualified and open-minded future professionals with international experience; expand cooperation between institutions.
The program is named after Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466-1536), the greatest scholar of the Northern Renaissance and an opponent of dogmatism. To expand his horizons and gain new knowledge, Erasmus lived and worked in many places in Europe.

The design is a mixture of the two main elements of the Erasmus programme: the prototype of the intellectual inspiration, Erasmus himself, and the allegory of the program’s impact on Europe. The beams of links that run along the coin from one beacon to another represent numerous intellectual and human exchanges between European students. The symbol of Europe in design is the formation of new stars from the bonds born of synergy between countries. The number 35 comes out of the stars in a modern graphic style.
